This month, SGV Mosquito added seasonal employees in our Operations and Communications departments to help control mosquitoes and educate the public during peak mosquito-borne disease months. The seasonals are officially onboarded and are assisting the District in the field with providing the highest level of protection from mosquito-borne diseases in the San Gabriel Valley.

In this newsletter, we’re listing our current programs that are available for booking, uncovering common myths about mosquitoes, and announcing a new full-time position at SGV Mosquito.

Let’s get the buzz on April.

Mosquito Fish

Did you know that there are mini but mighty fish that eat mosquito larvae? Mosquito fish, also known as Gambusia affinis, are a low-maintenance and eco-friendly way to keep your permanent water sources (like unused fountains, ponds, etc.) free of mosquito larvae.

The District provides these fish as a method of biological mosquito control, free of charge. To request mosquito fish, residents should Submit a Tip online and our specialists will:

  • Conduct a site inspection for any potential mosquito sources
  • Assess the permanent water source to ensure water quality for the fish
  • Handle the placement of mosquito fish
  • Check in on the fish semi-regularly (add more or remove some fish)
  • Collect the fish if they are no longer needed
