Honoring District Partners in Public Health Engagement
At the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District, we believe that a healthier future is something we build together. Our mission to protect public health is fueled by a profound sense of purpose, but it is made possible through the strength of our partnerships.
"Its the dedicated leaders and cities in the San Gabriel Valley who transform mosquito control science into a shared story of safety and care." - Jason Farned, District Manager
Today, we are proud to celebrate three standout partners who embody the spirit of innovation and advocacy that defines our region.
Excellence in Engagement and Collaboration Award: City of Duarte
This award recognizes outstanding efforts in creating meaningful partnerships and community involvement to advance public health and vector control initiatives.
The city of Duarte has demonstrated outstanding commitment to public health and vector control by creating meaningful partnerships through exceptional collaboration and community engagement efforts. Duarte has gone beyond traditional outreach to build meaningful, lasting education with residents and stakeholders, ensuring that mosquito and black fly control is not just a District service, but a shared community mission. The city hosted the district at numerous events and presentations, a dedicated mosquito awareness week. Additionally, the city engages with the District’s resource tool kits which helps promote mosquito awareness across digital platforms.
This collaboration was made possible through dedicated efforts of our trustee, Councilmember Margaret Finlay, city leadership, and staff. Their work proves that when we collaborate across the region, we create a stronger, more resilient San Gabriel Valley.
Excellence in Social Media Engagement Award: City of Pomona
This award recognizes innovative and impactful use of social media to educate, inform, and engage the public on mosquito awareness and vector control.
In a digital world filled with noise, this award honors the city of Pomona, who has mastered the art of "turning scrolls into safety." It recognizes the innovative use of digital platforms to educate, inform, and inspire residents in real time. The city of Pomona has demonstrated outstanding commitment to public health and community education by engaging and promoting the SGVmosquito’s social media content proactively and consistently. The city’s partnership helps shape the way the public views vector control, making complex science accessible, engaging, and undeniably shareable.
Distinguished Trustee Engagement Award: Corey Calaycay (Claremont)
This award celebrates exceptional leadership and advocacy by a trustee in strengthening community outreach and supporting the District’s mission.
This award celebrates the District’s Secretary/Treasurer, Claremont Council Member Corey Calaycay, a leader who is committed to public service and public health. We are grateful for Trustee Calaycay’s steadfast advocacy, exceptional leadership, and guidance as the District faced an unprecedented challenge while responding to the Eaton Fire and uncertain funding. Trustee Calaycay shared his wealth of institutional knowledge stemming from his extensive background with the State Legislature and his various leadership roles across the region. His ability to connect the District's mission to the broader needs of the community ensures that vector control remains at the forefront of the regional conversation. Trustee Calaycay’s visionary leadership continues to strengthen the bond between our residents and the vital public health services they rely on.
As we look toward a new mosquito season, these awardees fill us with hope. They remind us that public health is driven by the shared purpose of protecting the places we call home. Their dedication provides the force multiplier our District needs to keep the San Gabriel Valley healthy, vibrant, and bite-free.
