This program is geared primarily towards the fourth grade level and is offered to every public and private elementary school in our District. Our goal is
to provide information to students in such a way as to both educate
and stimulate an interest in biology and public health, and more
importantly, mosquitoes, bees, ticks, fleas, and other vectors of concern in the San Gabriel Valley.
Student Workbooks:
The cornerstone of our Program is our 20 page Student Workbook.
These workbooks follow the Science Framework for California Public Schools for 3rd-5th grades. Copies are available to every student in the 3rd, 4th, or
5th grade (depending on student reading levels) as requested by teachers,
Principals, or District Superintendents. Schools are requested to target the materials to one grade level so that the materials can be incorporated into the teacher's annual science curriculum.

Included with each order is a Teacher's Edition providing additional
information and ideas, as well as class sets of relevant "Bookmarks to
Color", and "Pest Police Badges" to accompany an exercise at the end of the unit. Each student also receives a certificate of completion for a job well done. These Workbooks cover such relevant topics as insect characteristics, classification, life cycles, biology, mosquito transmitted diseases and their histories, breeding habits, and prevention measures for reducing mosquitoes. In addition, important information on the Africanized honey bee is provided.
These Workbooks are provided free of charge to schools within our District boundaries and will soon be available for download on this web site.
Classroom Presentations:
Classroom visitors are always a welcomed addition to a teacher's
curriculum. Our District provides interactive presentations that
help bring the world of insects to life for students. Live
insects and pinned insect collections are always a big hit with the
kids, and depending on the grade level, either puppet insects or
microscopic visual aids add excitement to the information. These
presentations are available for all grade levels, however we've found
significant success in scheduling presentations for 3rd-5th grades to
accompany the Student Workbook curriculum.
Insect Study Loan Boxes:
Available for the school year are Loan Boxes designed to
provide classrooms with a week long tool that can be used to augment an insect
study unit, or in conjunction with one of our other programs. These
boxes can be checked out for one week periods, and provide students with
both visual and manipulative resources to aid learning. The
following items are included with these boxes:
- Pinned collection of local insects.
- Reference books and insect literature for various reading levels.
- Eyewitness Insect video
- Detachable carpet board with insect life cycle and anatomy sets for individualized learning.
- Laminated insect poster
- Student Workbook and Teachers Edition
- Insect collecting and holding containers
- Insect viewing chambers
